 The Rules
« Thread Started on Apr 8, 2008, 10:35am »

Thank you for choosing to read the site's rules! I know this seems like a lot, but they aren't actually too hard to follow once you get the hang of them.

The Rules

1) Respect all staff and members. Not hard, just treat them like you would like to be treated. They are human on the other side of the monitor, after all. As for staff members, if you disagree with something they have said, tell them politely why you think that. The site's staff are reasonable people and as long as you treat them with respect they will be more than willing to help you.

2) Flaming, Trolling etc. is NOT allowed. That means no picking on other members and outright insulting them. Kind of related to number one.

3) If you make a minor error we will probably let it slide, everyone makes mistakes sometimes. But if you break the rules too much you will recieve an official warning. Three official warnings earns you a ban for a time period depending on how badly you've been acting. The first official warning when you come back after your temporary ban is a ban for life.

4) If you disagree with a Staff member on something they have mentioned to you in a thread you MUST, PM them to discuss. Do not talk about it in the thread. Again, be polite and respectful and they will be more than willing to help you.

5) When creating a new character, follow all guidelines posted in the Student Sign-Ups. For example, if a particular field asks for more than one paragraph, please post more than one paragraph. Kind of a no-brainer. Your profile will not be accepted if you do not follow the guidelines.

6)You are not allowed to post anywhere but the OOC and Welcome categories before your profile is accepted!

7)One image per signature. Quotes are fine, just no more than one image. Images must be no wider than 500 pixels because it stretches the forum and annoys everyone who are trying to post.

8) No spamming! We have an advertising board for a reason. If you would like to advertise that's the place. PMing and other boards are not the place to advertise!

9) This is a forum for all levels of role-players, beginner to advanced. Still, even the newest role-player should be able to post a minimum of three full lines, so that's the limit. You can go over as far as you want, just not under. If you're stuck for what to write, think about what your character might be thinking or feeling and put that.
Also, THE SPELL-CHECK BUTTON IS THERE FOR A REASON! It is so annoying to have to try to decipher a post written by someone who was too lazy to use spell-check. I know that there isn't a grammar-check button, but don't abandon grammar completely. Full stops and commas aren't that hard.

10) NeT SpEaK iZ nT oK. If U tYpE lYkE dIs, U r In Da WrOnG pLaCe N u WiLl GeT a WaRnInG.

11) By joining HVA, you have agreed to create a student or professor profile and post in character. If you do not do the last one, we will give you a warning or a ban. This is a role-play forum. As much as we try to make it a chat one with our constant OOC posting, it's staying that way.

12) Let's keep the swearing minimal. I've taken a few words off the censored list but if this gets abused they'll go back right up again. A few mild curses are fine but if people start f-bombing then action will be taken. Avoiding word filters by changing the spelling of words will NOT be tolerated.

13) Posting etiquette! If you join a thread that is open, you have until the end of page one to do so if there's already someone posting. If there are already two people there and you join you must obey posting etiquette. Which means it goes like this:

Person A starts the thread
Person B joins
Person C joins
Then person D joins
Everyone involved MUST wait for person A to post again. Then person B, Then C, Then D. Person B and D can't have a ten post conversation in that thread, people get swallowed up. Posting order it keeps things from running out of control unless it's a party thread. I know that can be frustrating waiting so if you want you should go open another thread if you both want to RP that badly.

14) Alt characters are okay, but don't overdo it! Only make another character if you think you can keep them active. We admins can tell if it's you, even if you hide your email address.

15) We're a PG-13 site, so try to keep it that way. However, if you have to role-play dirty then either keep it to PMing or post a warning in the title of your thread.

16) Necromancy, AKA reviving old threads, is NOT allowed. Anyone who is found reviving threads that have been dead for two weeks or more will be punished, and yes, this includes OOC.

17) Please try not to power-play other members. That means, don't say they do anything in your post without the other member's permission. For example, saying another character got up and talked to yours in one of your posts, when that character was controlled by another person. You can do things like putting a key into another person's hand or stating the obvious - if you whack someone over the head with a pitchfork they are at least going to stagger backwards. Not doing that would be kind of Mary Sue / Gary Stu-ish.

18) No Mary Sues / Gary Stus! In other words, no perfect characters! Because let's face it, Cleopatra Moonshine with her perfect blonde hair and blue eyes - stunning without even trying - and her wonderful radiant personality, is just not that interesting. We like characters with depth, characters that are realistic. That means they need flaws and faults, they aren't all perfect. How would this site be if everyone was stunningly beautiful and gentle and kind and saved the day every day? (Write 'Arabian Nights' in Red in your character application so we know you have read the rules.)

Thanks for reading the rules. Check back every now and then, we update them occasionally and you don't want to be caught out.
